WE DID IT

The members  of the New Market Rotary Club enjoyed a poolside Surf and Turf party at  the home of Tom Constable on 19 June 2010 with plenty to eat. The  barbecue included steamed shrimp with a special seasoning known only to  Tom, steaks on the barbie, and many side dishes. As far as Tim Palmer  was concerned, the main attractions were the pies and cakes. Tom dug  into the shrimp while others enjoyed the steak and shrimp. Since the  ladies all looked very lovely in their party apparel, the men got things setup and ran the barbecue. A special thanks to Beverly Holsinger who  coordinated the event and to Richard Torovski who put out a special  effort to come up with tables and chairs for everyone. A big THANK YOU  goes out to Tom Constable for allowing Rotary the use of his home for  the party. The Surf and Turf party has also been held in the past at  Kevin Cannon's house.

BUT WAIT A  MINUTE !

The Rotary  Club also took on the responsibility of organizing and coordinating the  on-site parking for the 4th of July New Market town celebration, a big success again this year. It should be noted that all money derived from parking is  returned to the local area. The celebration was enhanced by a carnival  sponsored by the fire department, an auction sponsored by the Lions  Club, and many other special town activities and entertainment. If you  missed it, you missed it! The day's celebration was concluded with great fireworks which came to us in two installments due to some undesired  fireworks at the launch site.

I want to  thank all the Rotary Members and others in New Market for their help,  including all the volunteers who helped us make the 4th of July the great event which it should be. As we all know, it is this kind of an event and cooperation  which makes New Market a quality place in which to live.

New Market Rotary Projects Update

We previously reported on the New Market Rotary Charitable Foundation efforts to raise funds for a new tarpaulin (tarp) for use at Rebel Park. The current tarp was damaged by hail at the outset of the 2009 season and rendered unusable. The tarp is a key factor in maintaining high school, Shockers and the New Market Rebel games on schedule during rain or threats of rain, given the short playing seasons for all teams.

To help pay for a new tarp, The Rotary Foundation has sponsored a 5 night cruise to Bermuda on Sept 18, 2010 on the Enchantment of the Seas out of Baltimore which has been marked-up, plus Royal Caribbean will match $50 for each cabin booked. We expect to raise about half of the $7k estimated price tag for a new tarp. The public responded with several bookings, but more funds need to be raised. You can still be a part of the cruise by contacting Larry Strawderman at 540-740-3173.

The public can help by making a tax deductible donation to the New Market Rotary Charitable Foundation noted for The tarp fund". Donors will be provided a letter for tax purposes in this regard. Checks should be mailed to: New Market Rotary at PO Box 411 New Market, Virginia 22844 or given to a Rotarian that you may know. New Market Rotary and the community appreciate your efforts in supporting this project.

Also, New Market Rotary has scheduled their annual benefit golf tournament on September 8, 2010 at the Shenvalee Golf Resort. Entry forms are available at the town office, Shenvalee Pro Shop or by calling Bernie Brown at 540-740--8768. Proceeds from the tournament are used to support community non-profit organizations and a variety of community needs.

Rick Goeres, from the Strasburg Club, had been introduced to us as the new Assistant Governor, starting July 1. However, we have leanred that he has taken a new Church in Virginia. The District Governor has asked Rick Glading to continue as our Assistant Governor for the year 2010/2011

District Youth Leadership Conference
The New Market Rotary Club has taken the opportunity to grow future business
leaders for several years. One way is through its involvement in the District
7570 Youth Leadership Conference hosted on the campus of Virginia Tech every
December. The New Market club supports and sponsors 3-4 students from Stonewall
Jackson High School to participate in the conference. With the help of the
school's guidance counselor and word of mouth, the students must apply and
undergo an interview process before a panel of Rotarian's. The selection
process begins in October. Once selected, the students will represent the New
Market club in Blacksburg, VA among 250 other students selected by other rotary
clubs. The district stretches from Winchester to Kingsport, Tn. representing
more than 70 clubs and over 4000 members. All costs for the weekend are paid by
the local club as well as a chaperon travels with the students. While at the
conference, the students are broken up into different groups to tackle many
issues relating to business both here and abroad. They have the opportunity to
work side by side with other students from other areas to demonstrate their
leadership abilities as well as build friendships. In January, the selected
students report back to the New Market club their experience about the
conference and how this may help them in the future. The New Market club has
seen a considerable increase in applicants and therefore has increased its
budget to this program.
