President Kevin Cannon, 2008/2009

Youth Exchange

Our Student during the 2008/2009 year will be Marcelo Saul Lizarrague Antona from Hualpen, in the State of Concepcion in Chile.  He is 17 years old. His father is a Pharmacist and his mother a Banking Executive. He has two brothers, Sergio Alberto who is 19 and Felipe Andres who is 4 years old.

Our Student during the 2007/2008 school  year was Fernanda Dias who came from Bela Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais State in Brazil, with a population of 2.5 million inhabitants. Nando, as we called her, had her 18th birthday on October 11 while she was in New Market.

Her father, Ildebrando do Carmo is a mechanic technician working at the Fiat auto plant, and her mother Valeria Khoury Rolim Dias works for a State agency promoting Minais Gerais abroad in order to attract foreign productive investments.  She has one brother, Eduardo, who is 12 years old.  Her native language is Portuguese but she is very fluent in English.

She attended the Stonewall Jackson High School and impressed her teachers by taking difficult subjects and is doing very well. She was on the Honor Roll each semester and graduated in May 2008.

She was a good mixer – can hold a good conversation with anyone.

New Market Rotary Club was proud and honored to have her with us for the complete school year.

Her host families, who each had her staying with them for a 3 month period,  were:

Tom and Donna Linski Jr.

Kevin and Judy Cannon

George and Rebecca Daugharty.

Her New Market Rotary Club Councilor was Jerry Biller.

Our member, Bernie Brown is the District Chair, Youth Exchange Committee.

Her sponsoring Rotary Club in District 4760 was the Belo Horizonte-Padre Eustaquio which meets at 8 pm on Thursday nights. They are a 24 year old club with 26 members (22 men and 4 women). They have a Rotaract Club with about 20-25 members and a Rotary Volunteers Program with about 25-30 non-Rotarian members, both are very active in the community.

The Club has a wheelchair bank, with 1500 wheelchairs which are loaned to the community and are very involved with both youth exchange and GSE programs.
